Whittonstall's Eco-Committee is excited about our work on becoming a more environmentally aware school. The committee is made up of volunteer children from Class 3. The committee meet on Friday lunchtimes with Mr Hammersley, the Eco-School's coordinator to discuss what Whittonstall already does well and how we can become an increasingly more eco-friendly and sustainable school.
We have completed a very detailed audit of the school's environmental impact and are aiming to regain our Eco-School Award. The committee identified our waste production as a problem. Therefore, we have introduced new recycling bins to class 3, created posters to promote their correct use and been litter picking around the village.
We continue to meet each week to promote environmentally sound education!
The committee's first job is to renew the 'Environmental Review' of school and think about which areas we would most like to focus on in school. In consultation with teachers and classmates, we will agree on three areas to focus on, such as reducing waste, saving energy or encouraging biodiversity.
Over the coming terms the children will learn more about these issues through assemblies, cross curricular work and play in class, external agency visits, Forest School and a dedicated 'Sustainable Schools' day in school with workshops on the themes.
